Shooting Scoring Rules: Inward, Outward, Decimal and Inner Ten

The same hole can be a 9 or a 10 depending on the rules. Here is how AimScan decides.

Calibre matters

AimScan stores the centre of each hole. To decide which ring a shot scores, it uses the calibre set in the folder, for example 4.5 mm for air guns or 5.6 mm for .22 LR. Use the diameter of the bullet you shoot, because that is what a scoring gauge measures.

Scoring methods

Inward (most common)

A shot counts for the higher ring as soon as the edge of the hole touches the ring line. This is the rule in ISSF and almost all national federations. AimScan calculates it as the distance from the target centre to the hole centre, minus half the calibre.

gauge distance = centre distance − calibre ÷ 2

Outward

A shot only counts for a ring if the whole hole is inside it. Some older and national rules use this.

gauge distance = centre distance + calibre ÷ 2

Shot centre

Only the centre of the hole counts. Useful when you want to compare groups without the influence of calibre.

Decimal scoring

In ISSF finals and many electronic systems, each shot gets a decimal value from 0.0 to 10.9. AimScan divides each ring band into ten equal steps. A shot just inside the 10 ring scores 10.0, a perfect centre shot scores 10.9.

Turn decimal scoring on per folder. AimScan shows a note when decimals are not usual for the target you picked. The session screen then also shows a decimal distribution of your tens.

Inner ten (X)

Many targets have an inner ten ring, used to break ties. A shot in the 10 that also falls inside the inner ten (with the same scoring method) is counted as an X. Results are shown as, for example, 531-6x: 531 points with 6 inner tens.

Teiler

The Teiler is the distance from the target centre to the hole centre in hundredths of a millimetre. It is popular in Germany and Austria for "best shot" competitions. Lower is better. AimScan shows the best Teiler per target and session.

Count best N

Some disciplines count only the best shots, for example MLAIC black powder events where the best 10 of 13 count. Set Count best N in the folder. The other shots are still shown and used for group statistics, but not for the score.

Series grouping

Series are used in reports and the session screen. Choose per folder:

  • Per target: every card is one series. Ideal when you shoot a fixed number of shots per card, such as 5 shots on a 25m precision target.
  • Fixed number of shots: shots from all cards are lined up and split into series of a fixed size. For example 60 shots on 10m air rifle cards with one shot each, grouped into 6 series of 10.

AimScan is a training tool. In a match, the official scoring by the range officer or electronic system always counts.
